The 20-Meter Shuttle Run (Beep Test)

The Beep Test, also known as the PACER test or the 20m shuttle run, is a multi-stage fitness test used worldwide by sports coaches and military organizations to measure an athlete's aerobic capacity.

How It Works

Participants run back and forth between two markers positioned 20 meters apart. They must reach the marker before the "beep" sounds. As the levels progress, the time between beeps gets shorter, forcing the runner to increase their speed until failure.

VO2 Max Correlation

Because the test follows a strict, mathematical progression of speed, sports scientists (like Ramsbottom) have developed highly accurate formulas to map your final Beep Test level directly to a VO2 Max score, eliminating the need for expensive laboratory testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good score?

A score of Level 8 to 10 is considered excellent for a young adult. Elite team-sport athletes (like professional soccer players) routinely score between Level 13 and 15.
