Understanding Value Added Tax (VAT) in the UAE
Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in the United Arab Emirates on January 1, 2018. It is a general consumption tax assessed on the value added to goods and services. The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, although some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt. Our UAE VAT Calculator allows you to easily compute the VAT amount to add to a price, or extract the VAT component from a total inclusive price.
How to Calculate UAE VAT
To calculate the VAT, input the monetary amount and select whether that amount is inclusive or exclusive of VAT. The calculator applies the fixed 5% rate to instantly display the base price, the VAT amount, and the final total.
Worked Example
- Exclusive of VAT: If your base price is AED 1,000, VAT is 5% of 1,000, which is AED 50. Total amount is AED 1,050.
- Inclusive of VAT: If your total price is AED 1,050, the base price is 1,050 / 1.05 = AED 1,000. The VAT component is AED 50.
