Framing a Wall

Estimating framing lumber correctly ensures structural integrity and prevents project delays. The number of vertical studs you need depends entirely on the length of the wall and your "On Center" spacing.

16 vs 24 Inches On Center

  • 16" O.C.: The standard for residential construction. Provides maximum strength and aligns perfectly with 48" drywall sheets.
  • 24" O.C.: Used in advanced framing techniques or for non-load-bearing interior partition walls to save on lumber costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include top and bottom plates?

No. This calculator estimates the vertical studs. For the plates, you must order lumber equal to three times the length of the wall (one bottom plate, and a double top plate).
